Prepossessing history.

“The brilliantly white castle walls and elaborate workmanship of the Main Keep have a beauty to which no other castles can compare.”

Construction & Expansions.

The Himeji castle has one of the most fascinating history events in all of Japan. The original model was built around the 14th century by the Akamatsu family, however the whole building was redesigned and rebuilt somewhere later in 1581 by the then-warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Finally, around 1601-1609, the Tokugawa family enlarged it to help the battle of Sekigahara.

Occupation.

After the original construction in 1346, it was discovered that (Akamatsu Sadanori) had built it as a fortification against local shoguns.

After the emperor, Nobunaga Oda, took control of the Harima district in 1577, he placed Hideyoshi in control of the castle, who converted the fortified building into a castle with over 30 turrets.

Turret- a defensive tower that projects vertically, usually present in medieval towers or buildings.

Behind The Design.

Himeji castle is also known as the white Heron Castle, because of the appearance. It is widely considered as Japan’s most spectacular castle for it’s imposing size, beauty and it’s well preserved, complex castle grounds.

The castle is both a Japanese treasure sight and a world heritage sight. (The only Japanese castle on the world heritage sight list).
